Digestive health is a center-of-the-plate topic at both Food Expo and the Scientific Program. On Sunday morning from 8:15 am – 9:45 am in Room 203AB, Session 010 Fiber: The Heart of Whole Grain will explore the beneficial role of fiber in the diet as it relates to chronic disease and the challenges and opportunities for increasing fiber and whole grains in the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans. At the same time in Room 204A, Session 007 Resistant Starch and Health will present the latest research on the association between resistant starch and colon cancer and chronic disease.
On Sunday afternoon at 2:25 pm – 2:45 pm in Room 210D as part of Session 041 Galactooligosaccharides: From Mother’s Milk to Mainstream Foods, Anne Birkett with GTC Nutrition will discuss the prebiotic and health benefits of galactooligosaccharides (GOS). As a prebiotic, GOS stimulates growth of Bifidobacteria and Lactobacilli, and reduces pathogen colonization via anti-adherence mechanisms. At 3:00 pm in Hall A, the New Products & Technologies Showcase will feature a probiotic for functional foods and beverages. GanedenBC30, a strain of Bacillus coagulans, is a spore-forming facultative anaerobe that produces the favored L (+) lactic acid. The spore-forming property enables it to resist destruction by acid and bile during digestion, allowing it to germinate in the gut. Several studies have evaluated the probiotic’s beneficial effects on symptoms associated with lactose intolerance, irritable bowel syndrome, and arthritis. This product will also be on display at Booth 2156.
At Food Expo, several companies will be featuring ingredients for digestive health. ADM/Matsutani America (Booth 2731) will demonstrate Fibersol-2, a slowly fermented, soluble fiber that has been shown in clinical studies to help support intestinal health. Biothera (Booth 544) will showcase a novel gluco polysaccharide, Wellmune WGP, which enhances key immune responses. Friesland Foods Domo USA (Booth 1419) will feature its dairy-derived prebiotic, Vivinal GOS. The product supports digestive health and assists in calcium absorption. GTC Nutrition (Booth 2323) will display several health-promoting ingredients, including Purimune GOS for immunity improvement, NutraFlora short-chain FOS for bone and digestion wellbeing, and BioAgave inulin fiber for digestive maintenance. Dairy Management Inc. (DMI, Booth 327) will sample an ice cream prototype containing probiotics.
