With 15-20% of attendees to the IFT Annual Meeting & Food Expo from outside the United States, it’s not surprising that many of the technologies on display on the Food Expo floor or presented in a Scientific Session originate from Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and other geographic locations. In addition, governmental agencies are showcasing the inventiveness of their domestic food industry.
Food Valley-Holland (Booths 1419, 1519)—a regional cluster of science and innovation—is hosting many food-related organizations from the Netherlands. Companies include EBI Food Safety, Friesland Campina Domo, Bridge2food, TNO Food & Nutrition Research, Waginengen University & Research Center, NIZO Food Research, OMVE Laboratory & Pilot Equipment, and BioQualys.
Food Valley-Holland is distributing a printed version of an online, 11-page supplement that was published in the June issue of Food Technology magazine. “Dutch Collaboration Nurtures Innovation” (http://members.ift.org/NR/rdonlyres/83E058FA-6A25-44FC-A79B-416693BB3AFC/0/0609onlineSupplement.pdf) highlights food innovation in the Netherlands. Four articles detail how government investments in R&D are facilitating advancements in food product development, how food researchers in industry, academia, and government partner to turn ideas into commercial successes, how pilot plants and ‘living’ labs enable product developers to test and advance their concepts, and how research and technology are converging to detect and control foodborne pathogens in minimally processed foods.
Food Valley-Holland also is handing out its Food for Thought newsletter (see photo, right), which covers food science news, technology, and developments from the Netherlands. The June issue highlights obesity and the role of lipids and protein in weight management.
