Study Shows That Egg Consumption Aids Weight Loss
posted on June 9, 2009
A breakfast of eggs can be a boon to weight loss, according to Nikhil Dhurandhar, who spoke Monday, June 8, at an Exhibitor Spotlight session sponsored by the American Egg Board.
Dhurandhar, Associate Professor, Pennington Biomedical Research Center, described his research in which a group of 160 overweight and obese adults spent eight weeks on a low-calorie diet. Half of the dieters consumed a breakfast of eggs five days a week, while the other half started their day with a bagel breakfast. The dieters who breakfasted on eggs lost significantly more weight and reduced their waist circumference more than the bagel breakfasters.
Donald Layman, a Professor Emeritus at the University of Illinois, also presented at the Exhibitor Spotlight session. Layman described his research exploring the beneficial effects of protein consumption. Increasing both quantity and quality of protein intake can be particularly beneficial during aging and weight loss, Layman said. He reported that amino acids, which are the building blocks of proteins, play a role not only in building new proteins, but in improving the body’s metabolic function.
