At a press conference on Sunday, July 18, Chemidex, a business-to-business search engine for food product developers, announced its name change to Innovadex (booth #4207). This change reflects the company’s new commitment to “speeding the innovation process by connecting product developers worldwide with material and ingredient suppliers,” with a new focus on the food and beverage industry. When the company first launched in 1997, it was focused primarily on the paint and coatings market, but over the years the interest and need for a comprehensive database of food and beverage ingredients has grown tremendously.

To meet this rising need, Innovadex has been working with the food and beverage ingredient suppliers and end-product producers over the past year to expand its technical document “cybrary,” and to enhance its features for product developers. Currently, more than 250 food ingredient suppliers worldwide are represented in the document repository, with technical information on over 5,500 products. Among newly introduced features, food and beverage product developers now can search for information based on a product’s type, end-use application, and performance criteria, as well as “benefits/claims” and “application” criteria that locate unique traits of particular ingredients and recipes. In addition, by partnering with Google, Innovadex is able to provide users with focused search results aimed specifically at food scientists. In addition to changing its name, Innovadex has announced the launch of its New Age of Innovation program, which seeks to identify high-tech savvy labs in the food and beverage industry to experiment with advanced device access to Internet-based information and communications applications. Each lab team will be permanently given at least one iPad for use by their group, for whatever application they discover is helpful in their development process. The only requirements for participation are Innovadex membership, completion of at least one application per team, and agreement to engage in a simple feedback process regarding iPad use for 60 to 90 days. Innovadex membership is free to all qualified product development professionals. The winning 25 food development teams will be announced on Sept. 2.
