The menu of Annual Meeting education options is extensive. More than 100 sessions and 1,200 poster presentations are scheduled on subjects ranging from clean labels to childhood obesity. The Food Expo will bring together 1,150-plus exhibitors in McCormick Place South, sprawling across space that is the equivalent of six and one-half football fields in size. The Expo is the food industry’s largest collection of ingredients, equipment, processing, and packaging suppliers under one roof, and it enduring effectiveness as a venue for identifying trends, gathering information, and forming and maintaining business relationships is well recognized.

High-Profile Speakers
In addition to the plethora of scientific sessions offering the latest information from experts in the field, IFT’s Annual Meeting is known for having notable, world-class speakers addressing broader food science issues. This year, bestselling author and CNN host Fareed Zakaria, an expert on international affairs, will apply his multi-layered world view to a discussion of the food challenges facing the planet in the keynote address on Sunday, July 14.

In addition, three high-profile Beacon Lecturers will bring global perspectives to their addresses on issues of importance to the food industry. The Beacon Lecturers are Hubert Deluyker, Scientific Advisor, European Food Safety Authority, David W. Robson, Head of Energy and Environmental Foresight for the Scottish Government, and Mark J. Manary, a physician, researcher, and professor, who works to end childhood malnutrition in Africa. Learn more their backgrounds and what they will be presenting:

On the Expo Floor
It’s hard to imagine a better way to get an up-close view of food industry product development and technology innovation than walking the floor of the IFT Food Expo. Traversing the Expo is sure to be a rich sensory experience full of new sights, aromas, and tastes as exhibitors serve up inventive food and beverage prototypes, showcase colorful new packaging, and demonstrate cutting-edge analytical and processing equipment. Here’s a look at some of the highlights of this year’s Expo.

Scientific & Education Programming
The Annual Meeting’s Scientific Program provides a forum for sharing knowledge and exchanging ideas on myriad food science and technology topics. It’s an ideal way to stay up to date about current research in food science and technology and its practical business applications. The peer-reviewed program is organized around key industry focus areas and the core sciences that represent the foundation of the food science discipline. Given the fact that there are more than 100 sessions in the Scientific Program this year, here are some sessions to be on the lookout for in some key trending topics.

IFT International Food Nanoscience Conference
The 6th Annual International Food Nanoscience Conference will take place prior to the start of the Annual Meeting & Food Expo on Friday, July 12, and Saturday, July 13, at the Hilton Chicago. Experts from around the world will provide updates on topics such as nanomaterial safety, emerging nanoscience applications, and consumer perceptions. The one-and-a-half-day conference, which begins at 1 p.m. Friday, will be preceded by a primer workshop on Friday morning.

Kicking off the Conference, John DiLoreto, founder of NanoReg, will be discussing Nanotechnology Applications and Developments in Non-Food Sectors in his keynote presentation, which takes place Friday, July 12, from 1:00–2:15 p.m. And make sure not to miss the closing session, “Consumer Perceptions, Education, Risk communication,” where Mitchell Cheeseman, Steptoe & Johnson LLP, will share insight on the public’s perceptions of nanotechnology and how the industry can address them.

Career Center Live
Looking for job? Have a position to fill? Look no further, IFT has you covered at the 2013 Career Center Live. Job seekers and employers will have multiple opportunities to connect at Career Center Live events at the convention center Sunday, July 14, Monday, July 15, and Tuesday, July 16. On July 14 from 12:00 to 3:00 p.m. the Career Center Live Networking Event provides a unique forum for employers and professionals to meet informally and explore possibilities. For employers and candidates alike, Career Center Live is effective way to network and plan your next move. A new event, an open networking reception, will take place 3–5 p.m. on Sunday. Career Center Live events also include opportunities for formal interviews, which are granted by appointment only.

    It would be great if there was a section all about helping the first-timers plan out their stay! With how many new young professionals that are beginning to attend, it would be great to find a way to engage them with tips and tricks for the show.
