New Approaches to Sustainable Packaging
July 15; 1:30-3:00 p.m.
Packaging represents about 76 million tons or ~30% of the total municipal solid waste in the United States. Possible ways to decrease packaging waste include reducing packaging at the manufacturing level; reusing packaging and designing it as refillable, returnable or durable; recycling packaging through the use of bio-based/green recycling programs and through the use of active materials. This Monday afternoon session will provide updates on new trends and advances in sustainable food packaging solutions. Examples of commercial solutions for the food industry will be discussed and the latest research updates will be offered from experts in the field.
Speaker Catherine Cutter will examine antimicrobial packaging for meat and poultry products and speaker Siriyupa Netramai will explore sustainable packaging approaches in Asia. Speaker Lisa Mauer will discuss hermetic bag storage of cowpea in West and Central Africa.
